A technical Trip to Hagia Sophia and Visit to the Istanbul Disaster Coordination Center
Date: 26 March 2014

We have planned a day-field trip that consists of visits to the Hagia Sophia Museum and to the Istanbul Disaster Coordination Center.

Hagia Sofia was built in 537 A.D. in the time of Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I and it is one of the greatest surviving architectural monuments from the Byzantine era. The structure now serves as a museum.

The structure has survived through many earthquakes that severely affected the city of Istanbul. Currently, the building is monitored by a strong-motion network monitored by the Earthquake Engineering Department of the Kandilli Observatory lead by Prof. Eser Çaktı. We will visit this wonderful museum and talk about the structure, earthquake resistance and seismic monitoring of this monument.

The second part of the trip will be a visit to the Disaster Coordination Center. We will talk to the experts and hear about the monitoring system for natural disasters and disaster preparation.

Geology of Istanbul Boat Tour
Date: 29 March 2014

We are also planning a second field trip which is a half day boat tour along the Bosphorus with a fellow geologist from Istanbul Technical University on board to give information on the geology of Istanbul. This tour might or might not require a small fee depending on our finances.

Please note that this field trip is on Saturday, which is the day after the conference week days.
